Interactive Roundtable

Which kinds of ethical issues does a young researcher need to address? Among these, which are specifically related to the field of educational research? What are the means to resolve such issues? This one-hour interactive workshop aims at providing some answers to these questions and, more importantly, at drawing the attention of young researchers on their relevance, especially within the field of educational research, broadly understood.

The interactive approach of this workshop aims at encouraging discussions between young researchers coming from very different geographical horizons and fields of expertise. Doing so, it will bring out new perspectives for ethics in educational research.

The workshop is led by Dr Ophélie Desmons and Dr Hélène Leblanc. Dr Ophélie Desmons is Associate Professor in philosophy at the INSPE of Paris – Sorbonne Université. Specialised in moral and political philosophy, she is responsible of the philosophy teachers’s initial training program in Paris. Dr Hélène Leblanc is Senior Lecturer in History of philosophy and semiotics. Since 2019, she holds a seminar on ethics for future teachers, as well as a course on philosophical approaches in education, at the FPSE of the University of Geneva.

The workshop will proceed as follows. After a brief introduction (10 minutes) by the coordinators, the participants will split into small groups (no more than 10 people per group). Each group will have 25 minutes to discuss one topic amongst these three:

• Ethical issues in educational research with ‘vulnerable’ groups
• Ethics of data sharing in research (Consent and Confidentiality)
• Publication ethics and the ethics of peer reviewing

Whenever possible, the participants will choose the topic they are more interested to discuss. The coordinators will move from group to group to encourage and, if need be, give new impulses to the debates. At this stage however they will let the greatest latitude to the participants within the discussions.

The last part of the workshop will consist in a feed-back and common discussion time. For each topic, one person per group will have a few minutes to present the results of her group discussion. A short debate will follow, moderated by Ophélie Desmons. In the meantime, Hélène Leblanc will take note of the main results of the joint discussion. These results will be shared at the end of the workshop and will remain open to comments during the whole length of the conference.
